Program Basics
Original Medicare
Quick answer
Original Medicare is the traditional fee-for-service program run directly by the federal government. It includes Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) and lets you use any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
Plain-English definition
Original Medicare pays a set share of covered services and you owe the rest as deductibles and 20% coinsurance. It does not include drug coverage or an annual out-of-pocket cap, so many beneficiaries pair it with Medigap and a stand-alone Part D plan.
Why it matters
Original Medicare offers the widest provider access but leaves you exposed to unlimited out-of-pocket costs unless you add supplemental coverage.
A simple example
You have Original Medicare plus Medigap Plan G plus a Part D plan. You see any Medicare-accepting doctor with almost no bill at checkout.
Common mistakes & misconceptions
- Thinking Original Medicare has a MOOP — it does not.
- Skipping Part D thinking Original Medicare covers prescriptions.
